Nestled in the hills of Meghalaya, Elephant Falls is one of Shillong’s most celebrated natural attractions. Known locally as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew, which translates to “Three Steps Waterfall,” this name describes the cascading nature of the falls: water flows over three distinct stages, each with its own charm and character.
The British are credited with naming the site “Elephant Falls” due to a large rock resembling an elephant that once stood near the waterfall. This rock served as a natural landmark and was a source of fascination for early visitors and colonial settlers. Unfortunately, an earthquake in 1897 caused the rock to crumble, leaving only the name to commemorate it. Despite the rock’s disappearance the name Elephant Falls endured and continues to capture the imaginations of locals and tourists alike.
The first tier of Elephant Falls is a broad cascade, hidden among the dense greenery, and its unique structure combines characteristics of a horsetail and punchbowl waterfall. The water spreads widely across the rocks, creating a soft, tranquil flow through the greenery. The second level, though visually more subtle, nearly dries up in the winter months and becomes a quiet, modest flow, blending almost smoothly into its surroundings. The third tier, however, stands out dramatically. It’s the tallest of the three, with a striking, sudden drop that reveals clear water spilling over rugged, uniquely shaped rocks, creating a stunning and dynamic scene.
Elephant Falls is located on the outskirts of Shillong in the East Khasi Hills District, specifically in Upper Shillong. About 12 kilometers from Shillong’s city center, the falls are easily reached by a short drive. Upon arrival, visitors can take a leisurely walk along well-paved paths and staircases that lead to each of the waterfall’s three unique tiers. The tourists visiting the falls can also visit Shillong Peak, the highest point in Shillong, which offers panoramic views of the town and surrounding areas.
The best time to experience the full grandeur of Elephant Falls is during the monsoon season, from June to September, when the water levels are highest. However, this season also brings slippery trails, so visitors should exercise caution.
