The AI chatbot Grok on X (formerly Twitter) was used by commenters to digitally undress real life women by altering their photos, with the morphed images publicly visibly through Grok’s own handle.
In response to a photo of two Bollywood actors shared by a film journalism outlet on X on December 30, users prompted Grok to replace the women’s dresses with bikinis, make them kiss, turn their clothes transparent, or carry out explicit acts.
Grok often complied with illegal user requests, generating photos of the women in states of partial nudity.
However, these acts of non-consensual undressing were not limited to celebrities. Users also tagged Grok under the photos of casual social media users, instructing the chatbot to undress the women or morph their bodies to create explicit images.
Rather then denying the requests, Grok often complied and ended up creating sexual deepfakes of the women, which then became part of its own profile.
While X’s help center states that users “may not post or share intimate photos or videos of someone that were produced or distributed without their consent,” such images were still generated by Grok.
X-owner Elon Musk has used Grok to create videos of fictional women wearing barely any clothing, encouraging his more than 230 million followers to try out the tool as well.
The Hindu reached out to xAI’s safety and media teams for comment, and received an automated message from its press email ID that stated, “Legacy Media Lies.”
