US vocal on Kejriwal’s arrest but not on Pakistan, State dept clarifies – Times of India

NEW DELHI: The US department of state on Wednesday denied being pro-Kejriwal tilt in their stand and said that everyone should be treated with consistent rule of law and human rights.
US state department spokesperson Mathew Miller was accused of being biased as they were vocal in Kejriwal’s case but kept silent over the Pakistan arrest case. The journalist questioned Miller regarding the state department’s question on the arrest of Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal but not doing the same on arrests of Pakistani opposition leaders.
“I would not agree with that characterization. We have made clear on a number of occasions that we want to see everyone in Pakistan treated consistent with the rule of law, treated with respect for human rights, as is our position with respect to any country in the world,” Miller said.
After Kejriwal was arrested on April 21, Miller, in a press briefing, said that the US in monitoring Kejriwal’s arrest and called on India to ensure “a fair and timely legal process” for the jailed Chief Minister.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar used the word “Maryada” on Tuesday to draw attention to the political remarks made by US, German, and UN envoys regarding Indian politics following Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s arrest. He stated that as sovereign nations, we should not meddle in one another’s domestic affairs.
EAM Jaishankar underscored that these are outdated and detrimental habits during a news briefing in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
“…These are old habits. These are bad habits…The word I use is ‘Maryada’ among countries, we are sovereign countries. We should not be interfering in each other’s internal affairs. We should not be passing comments about each other’s politics,” he said.
He further underscored that they have told the diplomats of these countries that India strongly objects to this.”Because once, if this becomes a rule, where do you stop? So we have been, in the cases where it has happened, we have told the diplomats of that country very clearly that we take very strong objection to it,” Jaishankar said.
He further said that other countries do not hold any right to comment on another country’s politics.
“We think this is not a good practice. And we would sincerely urge all countries in the world to say that you please, by all means, you can have your views about the world. But no country has the right to comment on another country’s politics, especially in situations like this,” he said.
