A 40-year-old woman transporting ganja from Andhra Pradesh to Maharashtra was arrested during joint surprise check by the Secunderabad Railway Police (GRP) and Railway Protection Force (RPF) on Monday.
The officials seized 7.9 kg of ganja valued at nearly ₹3.95 lakh from her.
The accused, identified as Bobbarala Laxmi, a resident of Munchingiputtu village of Alluri Sitarama Raju district, was found carrying four packets of ganja wrapped in brown tape in her luggage.
Investigations revealed that Laxmi was transporting the contraband from the Paderu forest area in Andhra Pradesh to Sholapur, Maharashtra, via Secunderabad. She was travelling with another accused, Bonya, who managed to escape when the police began questioning passengers on the Konark Express after it arrived from Visakhapatnam around 11 a.m.
Laxmi confessed to assisting in the smuggling operation at the behest of Bonya, whom she had known for two decades. Bonya, who has twice been jailed under the NDPS Act in earlier cases at Srungavarapukota and GRP Visakhapatnam, had offered her ₹3,000 per trip to transport ganja.
A case was booked and efforts are underway to trace the absconding accused.
