Vitamin D serves essential functions which extend past its role in bone strength. The human body needs vitamin D to properly absorb calcium and phosphorus which build strong bones and teeth. The absence of sufficient vitamin D in the body, causes bones to become thin and brittle, which can result in rickets among children, and osteomalacia or osteoporosis among adults.
The body uses vitamin D to boost immune function which enables the defense against infections and decreases inflammation levels. The body relies on vitamin D to control muscle activity, brain health and mood regulation, and it may protect against cancer diabetes and heart diseases.
