A wild elephant that had ventured in the Kallar River last week was found dead in the Kokkathodu Forest Range near Thannithodu here on Monday.
The elephant, estimated to be around 35 years old, was first spotted standing in the river near Elavumkal on Thannithodu Road, seemingly reluctant to return to the forest. Concerned by its unusual behaviour, the Forest department intensified surveillance. Although the animal eventually retreated into the forest at midnight, it reappeared over the weekend, this time accompanied by its calf, and remained in the river for extended periods.
Despite attempts by Forest officials to drive them away using crackers, the elephants showed little response. Eventually, they wandered back into the forest.
The prolonged presence of the elephant in the river had attracted large crowds, prompting forest officials and a veterinary team to intervene. However, as the animal remained in the water, an immediate examination was not possible.
Officials suspect that the elephant’s prolonged stay in the river might have been due to a stomach infection. A post-mortem examination is expected to provide further clarity on the cause of death.
