Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay on Thursday urged the BJP government at the Centre to immediately withdraw theproposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
In a statement, he said the Bill had again raised question marks over“secular values” that is the fundamental core of India’s democracy and also the framework of Indian Constitution.
The proposed amendments amount to breaking the promises given to the minority community by our Constitution and political leaders, Mr. Vijay said. “The BJP government is engaged in majoritarianism and divisive politics which has lead to the Islamic community living in fear and without safety. This is a ‘psychological attack’,” he said.
“The BJP government says the amendments are brought in for the benefit of the Muslim community, and that the Opposition is diverting [attention] through false propaganda. If what they are saying is true, why was there no Muslim representative to introduce the Bill,” Mr. Vijay asked.
TVK had passed a resolution in its first general body meeting seeking the withdrawal of the bill, he said.
If the BJP government does not withdraw the bill, TVK will join hands with the Islamic community and protest, he adds.
