Two women were killed in a freak accident when an electric pole fell on them on Sudduguntepalya Main Road in Baiyappanahalli on Monday night.
The deceased have been identified as Sumati and Soni, aged around 32 to 35 years. According to the police, the duo was passing by on the road where repair work was on. An earthmover engaged in the work went into reverse gear and crashed into an electric pole, which collapsed owing to the impact of the collision.
This pole fell on the two women who were passing by. Both sustained severe head injuries. They were rushed to a nearby private hospital, but were declared brought dead. Other people at the site had a narrow escape.
The Baiyapanahalli police rushed to the spot and arrested the driver of the earthmover and seized the vehicle.
A case of death due to negligence has been registered against the driver for further investigation.
