Chief Minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated the Huchchappaswamy Jatra Mahotsava at Doddabala village in Nagamangala taluk of Mandya district on Tuesday.

The event also marked the celebration of a group of 14 other deities and was attended by a large gathering. The celebration was being held after 39 years as it was temporarily stopped pending the construction of a temple.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Siddaramaiah said that each religion and community followed its own beliefs and customs and it was important to respect all of them. He said the Constitution of India provides for the practice of everyone’s beliefs and called for mutual respect for customs and traditions.

Underlining the importance of education, Mr. Siddaramaiah said that the architect of the Indian Constitution B.R. Ambedkar, placed the highest priority on this. The Chief Minister said society should eschew the caste system and noted that when there was economic power, social progress also followed.

He also remarked that merely worshipping god while committing acts that are forbidden would not erase ones sinful deeds. It was more important was to practice tolerance, he added.

Mr. Siddaramaiah said an individual should not be judged by caste but by capabilities. Education is a must for cultivating self-respect or one would be subject to exploitation, he added.

He said that the State government’s guarantee schemes has benefitted members of all communities and helped them improve their social well-being. “We have conducted a socio-economic survey to understand the condition of the communities but certain people have misconstrued it,” he added.

Mandya district in-charge Minister Cheluvarayaswamy and others were present.
