National Conference (NC) president and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah on Thursday urged people to ensure Urdu and Kashmiri were passed on to the future generations to protect the region’s identity.

“To protect our identity, we must sustain our existence, which can only be achieved by keeping our mother languages alive. The sign of living nations is that they keep trying to keep their civilisation, culture, language and culture alive,” Dr. Abdullah said.

He made these remarks on the occasion of ‘Mother Language Day’ observed on February 21.

The NC patron said all the languages spoken in J&K were essential to preserve the region’s unique identity and Kashmiriyat. “Every individual must take personal responsibility for preserving all languages spoken across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh, including Urdu,” he said.

Without naming any party, Dr. Abdullah said “hostile elements were trying to harm Urdu and Kashmiri by labelling them as regional or religious languages”.

Underscoring the need to oppose such elements, Dr. Abdullah said people need to resist such efforts and ensure Urdu and Kashmiri are passed on to future generations.

“Preserving one’s language, culture, and heritage is a hallmark of proud and resilient nations. History bears witness to the fact that nations that forgot their language, culture, and traditions eventually faded into history,” he added.
