Police refute social media reports on ‘caning’ of cricket fans in Telangana’s Karimnagar

Karimnagar Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Venkat Swamy has denied resorting to lathi-charge on cricket fans in Karimnagar during the celebrations to mark Team India’s ICC Champions Trophy-2025 victory over New Zealand on Sunday (March 9, 2025) night.

In a statement issued here on Monday (March 10, 2025) , he said the reports circulating on social media about cricket fans being lathi-charged in Karimnagar were false and baseless.

A group of cricket fans had gathered at Geethabhavan chowk and organised celebrations in Karimnagar on Sunday night. That led to traffic congestion on the busy main road and the police on duty at the traffic junction “intervened in a friendly manner” to regulate vehicular movement, the ACP said, adding that there was no lathi-charge.

He said stringent action would be taken against those spreading false information and misleading content on social media as per law.
