People face hardships due to dug-up roads in Kerala’s capital

The Kedaram Nagar Road in Pattom which has been in disrepair for the past few months.

City residents tend to look forward to extension of new services, be it piped cooking gas supply or drainage, to their respective areas, but the dug-up roads that remain after these works continue to make their life difficult for months or years on end. Some of the interior roads in the capital city, maintained by the Corporation, which were dug up for the city gas project of AG&P Pratham, and for the Kerala Water Authority’s works have remained untarred for months.

Some of the city roads, including the Kalakaumudi road near Kannammoola and the Kedaram Nagar road in Pattom, have been in an unmotorable state for quite some time after gas pipeline and other works. In the case of Kedaram Nagar, the preliminary work for surfacing with a layer of larger metal pieces was done months ago. But with no work being done to level the surface, the road which connects Marappalam to Chalakkuzhy, has now become difficult to navigate even for pedestrians.

According to V.K. Prasanth MLA, the delay in restoring these roads has been due to financial issues faced by the contractor.

“Usually when roads are dug up for any work, the agency involved has to remit the cutting fees in proportion to the distance of the road being cut. In this case, the AG&P has remitted the amount, but the work has been delayed due to financial issues faced by the contractor. We have held meetings regarding this and the contractor has said that the restoration work will be completed this month. Some other roads in the constituency which were dug up earlier have been restored,” said Mr. Prasanth.
