Animal and Nature Ethics Community Trust (ANEC), a Kochi-based non-governmental organisation, has filed a complaint with the Wildlife Crime Control Bureau, New Delhi, alleging foul play in the recent death of a female tiger at Pancharakolly in Wayanad.
The NGO claimed that the Department of Forests and Wildlife failed to follow proper procedures and that officials had intruded into the forest.
The necropsy of the tiger revealed that it had died as a result of deep wounds on the neck likely incurred in combat with another tiger. The government had already declared it a man-eater and issued an order to shoot it if necessary after it mauled a woman and later attacked a rapid response team member.
ANEC had filed a public interest litigation in the Kerala High Court in 2023 in a similar case, which was dismissed by the court. The case involved an order from the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests to take appropriate steps to eliminate a tiger that had killed a man at Moodakolly in Wayanad.
