KOLKATA

The West Bengal police said on Thursday (April 17, 2025) that 60 FIRs have been lodged in connection with the violence in Murshidabad district and the number of arrests has climbed to 274.

Additional Director General of Police (South Bengal) Supratim Sarkar said that a special investigation team has been formed under the leadership of Syed Waquar Raza, DIG of the Murshidabad range.

Mr. Sarkar added that the police have arrested the prime accused in the murder of two men from the same family, Haragobind Das and Chandan Das. The police officer said that the accused, Inzamul Haque, who had been on the run, will be produced before a Court.“

“According to our investigation, he was among those behind the brutal incidents of April 12. Not only that. He also attempted to hide evidence from the police. He cut off the electric supply to CCTV in the area and damaged evidence,” Mr. Sarkar said.

Shops reopen

The police officer said that we are identifying every person directly or indirectly related to these deaths and will not spare any of them. According to West Bengal police, 70% of the shops in violence prone areas have opened, and 85 people have already returned home.

Violence erupted in Murshidabad district on April 11 and 12 during protests against The Waqf (Amendment) Act. Three people died and hundreds were left homeless after several houses were set on fire. Hundreds of people had to flee and take shelter in the adjoining Malda district.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma visited parts of Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, which also saw violence related to protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act. Mr. Verma said that the situation was “absolutely peaceful”. Supporters of the Indian Secular Front (ISF) and policemen had clashed on Monday during protests. 17 persons have been arrested, and the Commissioner said that more arrests will be made.
