Shivamogga police have arrested a person from Bhadravati on the charge of sending suspicious parcels to three persons in Shivamogga in the name of BJP MLC Dr. Dhananjay Sarji.

The accused, Souharda Patel, 26, of Shivamogga, allegedly sent parcels to S.N. Nagaraj, secretary of National Education Institute, and two psychiatrists in the city. The parcels looked like sweet boxes with a covering letter that carried new year greetings from the BJP legislator.

As Mr. Nagaraj found the ‘sweet’ in the box highly sour, he informed Dhananjay Sarji, who conveyed that he had not sent any box. Later, a complaint was filed with Kote police in Shivamogga.

After an investigation, the police found that Souhard Patel packed sweets laced with medicine over personal differences with the trio. He had been angry with Mr. Nagaraj since his days as a student in one of the colleges run by the society. Mr. Nagaraj had reportedly scolded him over his conduct in the college.

The police learnt that Souharda Patel was under treatment for depression. He had earlier consulted the psychiatrists, whom he sent the boxes packed with sweets laced with tablets meant for treating anti-depression. He used a courier service agency in Bhadravati to send the parcels in the name of Dhananjay Sarji. He assumed that if the parcel was sent in the name of the BJP legislator, the receivers would take them seriously.

The accused has been remanded to judicial custody.
