In a setback to the Congress government in Karnataka, Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot has returned the Greater Bengaluru Governance Bill, 2024, which was passed by the State legislature during the just-concluded budget session, to the government seeking some clarifications.

The Bill proposes to split Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into a maximum of seven city corporations in the Greater Bengaluru Area.

Speaking at a press conference in Bengaluru on March 26, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs H. K. Patil said the Governor has returned the Bill seeking some clarifications. Along with a note on clarifications, the Bill would despatched to Raj Bhavan again seeking the assent of the Governor, Mr Patil said.

The Bill was drafted following a report prepared by the legislature joint review committee, headed by Congress MLA Rizwan Arshad.

The Bill proposed that the population in each city corporation should not be less than 10 lakh. The density should be 5,000 inhabitants per square kilometre.

Mr. Patil said that since August 2023, a total of 119 Bills have been passed by the State legislature. Of them 83 Bills have become laws, and came into force. Currently, four bills are with the Governor. The Governor has sought clarifications on seven bills, he said.

Mr. Patil said the Raj Bhavan sent five Bills to the President of India for approval.

A few days ago, the Union Home Ministry rejected the State Government’s proposal to change the name of Ramanagara district to Bengaluru South.
