The State woke up to cloudy and wet morning on November 30, Saturday, as light to moderate rainfall was recorded in many places across the State while very heavy rainfall, above 100 mm and accompanied by gusty winds, lashed several parts of Tirupati district under the impact of the cyclonic storm Fengal.
As per the information available on the A.P. State Development Planning Society, Bheemulavaripalem in Tirupati district received the maximum rainfall of 131.5 mm between 8.30 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday. Mannarpolur in Sullurpeta mandal of the district recorded 128.75 mm, and Tada 108 mm.
Chittoor and Nellore districts recorded moderate to heavy rain. Nagari recorded 92 mm, Nindra 84.5 mm, Puttur 81.5 mm, Allampadu 76.5 mm, and Karvetinagar 63 mm. The highest rainfall in Nellore district was recorded in Thotapalligudur at 55.25 mm. Many other places in the district recorded 40-50 mm rain.
In Rayalaseema, except for Kurnool, Nandyal and Anantapur that recorded very light rain at a few places, the other five districts received light to moderate rainfall.
In North Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Visakhapatnam city recorded 27.75 mm during the period while other places in the district too recorded light to moderate rainfall. Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts recorded less than 10 mm rainfall and Anakapalli district recorded 15.25 mm at Sabbavaram. West Godavari, NTR, Krishna, Guntur, Prakasam and Eluru districts received light rainfall, between 8 mm and 20 mm.
The 7 p.m. bulletin from the India Meteorological Department, Amaravati, said the cyclonic storm over southwest Bay of Bengal moved west-southwestwards with a speed of seven kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 5.30 p.m. over the southwest Bay of Bengal off North Tamil Nadu coast, about 40 km away from the coast, 50 km south-southeast of Mahabalipuram, 60 km east-northeast of Puducherry and 90 km south of Chennai.
It is likely to move west-southwestwards and cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry coasts between Karaikal and Mahabalipuram, close to Puducherry, as a cyclonic storm with a wind speed of 70-80 kmph gusting to 90 kmph during the next three to four hours.
Yellow alert
The IMD has given a yellow alert for the districts of SPSR Nellore, Tirupati, Annamayya, Chittoor, YSR and Sri Sathya Sai for December 1. There are no rainfall alerts for December 2.
According to the A.P. State Disaster Management Authority, strong winds, flash floods and heavy rain are likely in South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and at a few places in Rayalaseema as the cyclonic storm makes its landfall. People living in low-lying areas near water bodies have been asked to be alert.
