Srikakulam District Congress Committee president Ambati Krishna Rao, on Wednesday, alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government was trying to tarnish the image of Congress party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as it was unable to digest the leaders’ growing popularity across the nation.

He alleged that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had filed a chargesheet against the Gandhis in the National Herald case only at the behest of the Union government, which wanted to suppress the voices of the Opposition in the country.

Along with Congress senior leaders Mohammad Saidullah Khan, K.V.L.S. Eswari, Ambati Dali Naidu and others, Mr. Rao staged a protest at the Income Tax office here. He raised slogans against the government and asked the ED to withdraw the “false case” filed against Ms. Sonia Gandhi and Mr. Rahul Gandhi.
