Clash at Kozhikode law college: case registered on student’s complaint

The Chevayur police have registered a case and started investigating into the recent clashes between Students Federation of India (SFI) and Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists on the Government Law College campus, Kozhikode.

The case was registered on Friday (December 13) following a petition moved by Amal Joseph, a first year law student who sustained injuries in the clash. Police sources said the complainant also submitted visuals of the initial incident, which occurred on Wednesday night. The clash reportedly stemmed from arguments over the college union inauguration.

Two senior students who allegedly spearheaded the attack were placed under suspension following an internal investigation into the incident. The college was closed indefinitely on Thursday as tensions and confrontations resurfaced. Five students, reportedly activists of the KSU and SFI, were injured in the second clash. There were also attempts by some campus protesters to manhandle police officers on duty at the scene.

“We suspect ragging attempts on the campus, and this will be further investigated based on the student’s complaint,” said a senior police officer from Chevayur station. He added that relevant sections of the Kerala Prohibition of Ragging Act would be invoked against the suspects, depending on the findings of the internal report.

Meanwhile, SFI functionaries claimed the clash erupted when a group of KSU workers attempted to disrupt the pre-scheduled college union inauguration by MLA K.M. Sachin Dev. However, KSU functionaries dismissed the allegations, claiming that the clash was sparked by SFI activists who vandalised the KSU’s flags the night before the inauguration.
