The South East Division Cyber Crime police on Monday arrested a gang of six including a 23-year-old woman for cheating an accountant of a private firm and made away with ₹56 lakh on December 6.

The accused Grishma Reddy, who is a chartered accountant (CA), also working as an assistant director and script writer for a Telugu film, and her associates N. Dinesh, 24, V.A. Pawan Kumar, 24, also CAs, Sharath M.S., 23, N. Sai Kumar, 22, B. Com graduate and a cab driver, and Yenumala, 32, a pre-university drop out and working as assistant director in a Telugu movie.

According to the police, the accused messaged Vasudha Meghashyam Dighole, the victim in the case, posing as managing director of her company using the company logo and a name in the display picture, informing her to transfer ₹56 lakh towards project advance deposit to an account number.

The complainant tried to call the MD to confirm, but she could not reach him and got a message that he is busy in a meeting. After transferring the money, she called the MD to confirm and realised that it was a cyber fraud. Based on the complaint, the police tracked down the accused through the money trail and arrested Sai Kumar, the cab driver to whom the money was transferred to. According to the police, the accused, withdrew the money and purchased crypto currency by cash and sold the same through a mobile app for a higher price.

Based on the confession, the police arrested the rest of the accused and recovered mobile phones, a car and cash ₹56,600 from them. The police also froze a bank account used by the accused to deposit ₹5 lakh. The police have taken three accused into custody after realising that they had committed similar offences.
