The Thrissur Corporation council has decided to initiate proceedings, including disqualification, under the Municipal Act and the Local Self-Government Election Act against six Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) councillors, who allegedly spread propaganda and filed cases that led to financial losses for the civic body.
According to the council, one of the major revenue sources of the Corporation was the income from Bini Tourist Home. After the property was returned by the previous lessee, several tenders failed and the Corporation was forced to forgo revenue for nearly two years. The council later leased the property to Janish P.S. for a monthly rent of ₹7.5 lakh, following due legal procedures.
However, the six BJP councillors allegedly carried out a campaign claiming irregularities in the process and filed cases in multiple courts. Though several courts dismissed the petitions, the councillors approached the Kerala High Court Division Bench, which also upheld the Corporation’s decision and imposed a penalty of ₹5 lakh each on the six councillors and the lawyer who filed another related case.
The council meeting on Friday, which also approved the 2025–26 Annual Plan, beneficiary lists for individual welfare schemes, and a Budget proposal to prevent the discharge of wastewater from homes and institutions into canals, further resolved to go ahead with the first phase of the Sakthan Nagar development project. This includes the approval of the plan and DPR for a ₹60-crore integrated fish and meat market complex.
