Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy alleged attempts to undermine the constitutional rights of the poor, Dalits, Adivasis and minorities under the guise of administrative measures by the BJP government at the Centre.
Addressing the “Vote Thief… Quit the Throne” rally in New Delhi on Sunday, the Chief Minister recalled the debates of the Constituent Assembly, claiming that RSS leadership had opposed granting voting rights to marginalised sections. It was the vision of Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar that ensured universal adult franchise, enabling these communities to participate in democratic governance.
Mr. Reddy alleged that, after coming to power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah sought a massive mandate of 400 seats to implement the RSS’s ideological agenda. However, he said, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi cautioned the public that such a mandate could lead to changes in the Constitution and dilution of reservations. “The people responded by limiting the BJP to 240 seats, thereby safeguarding the Constitution and the reservation system,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister further alleged that new initiatives being introduced under Special Intensive Revision (SIR) were aimed at systematically robbing the poor citizens of their voting rights. “First, voter IDs will be removed, then Aadhaar and ration cards, and eventually people will be stripped of their property and their rights,” he claimed.
Seeking support for Mr. Rahul Gandhi, he said that just as Gandhi and Ambedkar had stood with the marginalised, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge were now leading the fight to protect constitutional values. He urged citizens to rally behind them.
He added that the alleged threat to voting rights was a national concern and not the problem of individuals. He declared that Telangana was ready to join Rahul Gandhi’s struggle and called upon people across the country to unite in defence of democracy and the Constitution.
