State Cabinet sanctions 159 posts at Cochin cancer centre

The State Cabinet has decided to create 159 new posts at the Cochin Cancer Research Centre (CCRC) in Ernakulam. They include 91 permanent and 68 contract posts. The new posts will be created as part of the first phase of the CCRC’s operations.

Industries Minister P. Rajeeve said that the new posts were being created on the recommendations of an expert committee appointed to estimate the number of staff required for various phases of the expansion of the centre. The Minister also announced that the cancer centre would be inaugurated in January.

The first phase of the CCRC is scheduled to commence operations with 100 beds. The Minister said that all crucial posts, including academic and non-academic posts, had been created for the purpose. The new positions created include eight Professor posts and 28 Assistant Professor posts. In the non-academic category, posts ranging from nursing superintendent to systems manager have been created.

Appointments will be made for 91 permanent posts. Besides, 68 temporary posts have been created in 14 categories. The staffing pattern at the CCRC has been modelled after other cancer centre such as the Regional Cancer Centre and the Malabar Cancer Centre.

An amenity centre is also being set up at a cost of ₹11.34 crore. The facility will offer accommodation for bystanders of patients.

Mr. Rajeeve said that the construction of the cancer centre, which had been stalled, was resumed in November 2021 and was completed in time.
