People from the Sports Development Authority of India (SDAT), Velammal Nexus, the media, and the public, along with a group of Velammal students and some stilt walkers holding cards that read “Velammal’s Pride Gukesh,” were waiting for the 18-year-old’s arrival with eager anticipation. He went into a lounge in his casuals and emerged in a blazer with his World Championship trophy in hand and the Indian flag draped on him. He walked out, engaging in a conversation with the SDAT officials Meghanatha Reddy and Atulya Mishra who’d flanked him on either side, ready to share his joy with and get lapped up by his beloved countrymen.
As he stepped out of the terminal, joy erupted. The cameras went berserk, and there were rhythmic chants of “Gu-kaaaae-sh, Gu-kae-sh!” The mirth was tectonic. The crowd seemed to converge on him. Everyone wanted a piece of him. It seemed as if he, who’d been garlanded, was lost in the chaos before he left in a car.
