Varun Chakaravarthy etched his name in the history of Indian cricket as the country’s oldest one-day international debutant since 1974, when he was awarded his ODI cap ahead of the second match of the series against England in Cuttack on Sunday.
At the age of 33 years and 164 days, mystery-spinner Chakravarthy is now second in the overall list of India’s oldest ODI debutants, behind former wicket-keeper Farokh Engineer who featured in India’s inaugural match in the format back in 1974.

Chakravarthy was presented with his debut ODI cap by the experienced all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.
“Varun, cap No. 259. It’s a special day for you and your family,” said Jadeja as the team huddled up for the cap-presentation ceremony before the toss, and the video was shared by BCCI on social media.
“From tennis-ball cricket to T20 cricket, we all have seen your magic. Now it’s time to do something really special in this format, and we all are with you. Just give your hundred percent. Good luck,” Jadeja added.

1. Farokh Engineer – 36 years, 138 days (1974, vs England)
2. Varun Chakaravarthy – 33 years, 164 days (2024, vs England)
3. Ajit Wadekar – 33 years, 108 days (1974, vs England)
4. Dilip Doshi – 32 years, 350 days (1980, vs Australia)
5. Syed Abid Ali – 32 years, 307 days (1974, vs England)
Chakravarthy also shared his thoughts on his momentous day.
“It feels really good because it’s been a long journey from my T20 debut, and (I have) got his breakthrough now. It’s come after playing a lot of domestic cricket, Vijay Hazare (Trophy). I will definitely cherish it and value it,” said the debutant.
He has already played 18 T20Is for India.
India lead the three-match series against England 1-0, having won the first match in Nagpur by four wickets.
On Sunday, India made two changes to their team composition as England won the toss and opted to bat. Virat Kohli came back into the side after missing the first ODI because of a knee niggle, taking Yashasvi Jaiswal’s spot, while debutant Chakravarthy stepped in for Kuldeep Yadav.
