Six new Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS) will begin operating in Tripura in August, the State’s Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma stated on Sunday (July 20, 2025). These schools are specifically designed for tribal students from grade VI to XII, providing them with a quality education free of charge.

With the addition of these six schools, the total number of EMRS in the state will increase to 12. The Minister also mentioned that the central Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned 21 Eklavya schools for the state and hopes that the rest will be established next year.

An official from the tribal welfare department stated that there are currently 2700 tribal students enrolled in the six existing EMRS, and this number is expected to double with the establishment of the six new schools. Besides, there are three “Ashram” residential schools managed by the state government with a combined strength of 800 indigenous students.

The official hoped that the establishment of EMRS and other residential schools in tribal areas would encourage indigenous children to enrol in school and significantly reduce the number of school dropouts.
