A popular brand of chocolate-covered fruit snack products sold nationwide in the United States has been recalled, as it may contain metal objects. The foreign substance may cause traumatic injury, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced.Here’s everything you need to know about the recall.
What are the recalled products?
On Sept. 26, Tru Fru, LLC announced that its third-party manufacturer, Georgia Nut Company (GNC) is voluntarily recalling specific varieties of Tru Fru Freeze Dried products due to the presence of foreign objects. The products recalled in the US include Tru Fru Freeze Dried Strawberries in Dark & White Chocolate and Tru Fru Freeze Dried Strawberries & Crème.
Why are the products recalled?
The products are being recalled due to the potential presence of metal in the product. There could be hard or sharp foreign objects in food that may cause ‘traumatic injury’. These include laceration and perforation of tissues of the mouth, tongue, throat, stomach, and intestine, as well as damage to the teeth and gums. The recall was initiated after a consumer alerted the company. No cases of injury or illness have been reported till Sept. 26.
How to identify the recalled products?
The two recalled products are Tru Fru Freeze Dried Strawberries in Dark & White Chocolate, and Tru Fru Freeze Dried Strawberries & Crème, sold in different-sized bags. You can check the back of the package for a 10-digit manufacturing code; the first four digits and/or letters in this code will indicate the implicated product. Where were the affected products distributed?
According to the FDA, these products were distributed in the United States. They were sold through retail stores and online retail, including but not limited to: Albertson’s, CVS, Food Lion, H-E-B, Hungryroot, Ingles Markets, Kroger, Stew Leonard’s, and Target.
What to do if you have the recalled products?
Those who have the recalled products are advised not to consume them. Instead, they should be thrown away. You can also get a refund by filling out Tru Fru’s online reimbursement form to receive a coupon.
