Minister R.B. Thimmapur visited Inam Veerapur village in Dharwad district on Tuesday and met the victims of a recent honour killing.

He met members of the family of Vivekanand Doddamani whose pregnant wife was killed by her family for marrying outside caste and consoled them.

He asked them to live without fear and assured them of protection. He also told them that the accused will face punishment as per law. “It is an unfortunate incident. It should not have happened. But now, we have to forget about it and move forward,” he said.

He said that the victims will be compensated.

He told reporters later that it is a social issue and not just a law and order one.

“All problems cannot be solved by law. We need to address some long-standing social evils like caste discrimination and promote social harmony. The State government will not only strive to provide justice to the victim’s family in this case but also work towards the larger goal of avoiding such incidents in future,” he said.

He visited some of the family members who are undergoing treatment at Vivekananda General Hospital in Hubballi. He told them that the State government will bear the cost of their treatment.

Sri Basava Murthy Madara Channayya Swami, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J., Superintendent of Police Gunjan Arya, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Bhuvanesh Patil and others were present.
