Evading the eye in the sky

As in the case of the stray dog menace issue, the intervention of the Supreme Court of India has become crucial in the stubble burning issue and its deep impact on air quality. However, it is quite surprising that the Court needs to intervene in a situation where farmers and the authorities ought to have managed the issue of stubble burning more responsibly rather than evading surveillance by satellites, as reported (Inside pages, November 13). It is deplorable that technological development is being exploited in a negative way instead of using science to evolve constructive ways of waste disposal.

Verdicts, time taken

The Supreme Court’s move to urge High Court judges to make public the time taken to deliver verdicts is a necessary reform (Front Page, November 13). Regularly updating this data on official High Court websites would make the justice system more accountable and reinforce the principle that justice delayed is justice denied.
