Winter session

It will be no surprise if the winter session of Parliament turns fractious, given that the Opposition is determined to raise issues such as Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, the Delhi bomb blast, and worsening pollution in the capital. The all-party meeting convened by the ruling party was dismissed as “ritualistic” and “useless” by an Opposition Member of Parliament. Clearly, consensus is impossible when the two sides of the political divide fail to see eye to eye.

Citizens expect greater maturity and wisdom from their leaders, along with a genuine effort to lift the quality of political discourse. In this context, one is left wondering why the ruling party does not take the initiative to hold more meaningful all-party meetings on key issues. Such consistent engagement could help bridge the widening gap, foster mutual trust, and encourage the Opposition to participate more constructively in parliamentary proceedings.

Renaming Raj Bhavans

The Union Home Ministry’s move, as a letter to the offices of Governors and Lieutenant-Governors, to rename all Raj Bhavans across India as Lok Bhavans is amusing (Inside pages, December 1). It is well-known that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led central government has been misusing the office of Governor in Opposition-ruled States to delay Bills, interfere in governance, and create political friction. The country requires substantive reforms and implementation rather than superficial rebranding efforts.
