The Meteorological Department has predicted light to moderate rain or snow at scattered places across the Union Territory over the next 24–48 hours, though in shorter and milder spells. In Jammu, minimum temperatures were recorded at 10.4°C in Jammu city, 6.5°C in Batote, 2.4°C in Banihal, and 2.2°C in Bhaderwah, indicating a steady fall as winter tightens its grip.
Officials said that preparations are in place to manage heavier snowfall if it occurs. Snow-clearing machines, power and water supply systems, health services, and essential commodity stocks have been reviewed. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah confirmed that the administration had completed preparedness checks across snow-prone regions in both Kashmir and Jammu. He added that, despite the challenges it brings, the snowfall was eagerly awaited for its role in cleansing the air, reducing pollution, and boosting winter tourism. Chillai Kalan will continue until late January, followed by the milder Chillai Khurd and Chillai Bacha phases.
