1. Karnataka II PU exams: From Shivamogga’s migrant labour camp, tales of grit and hardwork

Geetha N. and Ganesh M., both students from a migrant labour camp located on the outskirts of Shivamogga city, have cleared the II PU examination in the Commerce stream with good scores. While Ms. Geetha secured 507 marks, Mr. Ganesh scored 403. These are among the first few children from the camp to study up to the pre-university level.

Their achievement stands unique for many reasons — they are children of parents who are illiterate and have no regular income. They study under the streetlights near the camp, which has no power supply. More than 60 families of migrant tribal communities have settled in the vacant land belonging to Kuvempu University adjacent to the university’s city office for over three decades.

2. No rooms for solo pilgrims visiting Raghavendra Swamy Mutt in Mantralayam

Devotees undertaking solo pilgrimage to the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt in Mantralayam, in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, are barred from availing accommodation in the vicinity, including those at the Karnataka State Choultry. Single travellers arriving at the mutt without prior reservation have been facing significant challenges in securing a place to stay.

A spokesperson for the mutt told The Hindu that this rule is being strictly enforced to prevent any untoward incident. He revealed that, in the recent past, the mutt faced pressure from local police following instances of missing persons and death by suicide by solo travellers. Even private lodges in the area have followed suit, reportedly due to similar concerns.

3. NCMC card recharge woes prompt Namma Metro to halt new card issuance in Bengaluru

The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has temporarily stopped issuing new National Common Mobility Cards (NCMC) following numerous complaints from commuters in Bengaluru about recharge issues over the last few weeks. The move has left several metro users relying on NCMCs in a bind, as technical disruptions continue to impact card functionality.

BMRCL officials attributed the problem to ongoing insolvency proceedings involving a partner agency of the private bank responsible for issuing NCMCs in Bengaluru. This has led to backend technical difficulties, rendering many cards inoperative. The official added that the issue is likely to be resolved by April 15, after which the issuance of new NCMCs may resume.

4. Raitha Sangha to hold regular santhes in Bengaluru to facilitate farmer-to-consumer direct sale in Karnataka

In an unique move to help farmers in an unequal agricultural market, the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha has taken up an initiative to facilitate sale of farm produce directly to consumers in Bengaluru on an experimental basis. The first such experiment will commence with a three-day santhe at Munivenkatayya Memorial Open Air Theatre in Rajarajeshwarinagar from April 12 to 14.

Farmers from anywhere in Karnataka can participate in the santhe if they register themselves with the KRRS in advance. The organisers are planning to give priority for the first 100 enrolments, as this the first effort. Apart from vegetables, the farmers are also getting foodgrains, jaggery and oil to sell at the santhe.

5. Belagavi-Mysuru flight emergency landing: Aircraft handling by crew was a factor, says DGCA report

The final investigation report of the abnormal runway contact incident involving a Trujet aircraft at the Mysuru airport in 2020 states that the probable cause of the incident was failure to manage the aircraft vertical path and improper Crew Resource Management (CRM) performance. It further added that prevailed weather conditions was a contributory factor and ruled out aircraft serviceability as a factor.
