Kangana Ranaut as Indira Gandhi in ‘Emergency’
Actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut has announced the OTT release date of her latest film, Emergency. Directed by and starring Kangana, the historical drama centres on the tumultuous life of Indira Gandhi, particularly her actions during the repressive years of the Indian Emergency (1975-1977).
On Instagram Stories, Kangana revealed the film will begin streaming on Netflix from March 17.
Written by Ritesh Shah, Emergency released in theatres on January 17, 2025, following multiple delays and controversies. Sikh groups had protested against the community’s portrayal in the film. Kangana, who took the lead role of Indira Gandhi, was joined by a large cast, including Anupam Kher as socialist leader JP Narayan and Milind Soman as Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw.
A passion project for Ranaut, Emergency tanked at the box-office and received mixed reviews. The film, according to reports, recovered a third of its purported budget.
In its review of the film, The Hindu said: “The muddled gaze results in a spiritual cousin of The Accidental Prime Minister where a biopic vilifies or dilutes its subject to serve the present dispensation.”
Ranaut will next be seen in a psychological thriller alongside R Madhavan. The actors had featured together in the Tanu Weds Manu series
