An elderly man was brutally assaulted by a group of youths in the middle of the road allegedly following an argument over giving way to a vehicle at Azhikkal in Kannur, Kerala, around 4 p.m. on Sunday.
The victim, Balakrishnan, a native of Azhikkal, lodged a complaint with the police on Monday.
A video of the assault, recorded by the assailants themselves, has gone viral. The footage shows Mr. Balakrishnan being beaten while sitting in his car, dragged out, and repeatedly slapped in the face in full public view. Later, the video shows the youths following him into a nearby shop and attacking him again, before local residents intervened and drove them away.
In the video, the attackers are heard claiming that Mr. Balakrishnan used obscene language when questioned about parking the car.
The police have registered an FIR based on Mr. Balakrishnan’s complaint and launched an investigation.
Police officers have visited the spot and collected evidence. The accused are yet to be arrested and the police are verifying whether they have any criminal background.
