Early morning fog to continue for a few more days, says Met department

The Regional Meteorological Centre here has forecast light fog/haze in some places in the State for the next few days. On Thursday early morning, Chennai city and surroundings witnessed light fog, though it was a bit heavy in places like Arakkonam, Tiruvallur and Chengalpattu where there was more vegetation. Open spaces, like large grounds, parks and roads are likely to get foggy.

“Visibility around 6.30 a.m. on the Arakkonam-Thiruvalangadu Road was affected due to the fog. We had to use headlights. This time somehow, the fog has been heavier than usual,” said G. Radhakrishnan, a retired headmaster and Arakkonam resident.

Guru Subramaniam, a resident of Pallavaram, said that since the weather was cold in the morning and late at night, security personnel guarding establishments burnt garbage to keep themselves warm and away from mosquitoes. “This morning, when I took an early morning Metro train to the city, visibility was poor but there was smog in the air,” he said.

Senior meteorologist Y. E. A. Raj explained that though winter was still on in the State, it may not be as cold as in the north. When temperature falls, air cannot hold onto the moisture — it can be either as dew formation or fog/haze. “That is what is happening. We will have fog/haze for some more days.”
