The Communist Party of India (Marxist) condemned the alleged police assault and detention of its functionaries as well as the general public, who took part in the protest against the encroachment of a public pathway by an individual in Ariyalur district.
In a statement, CPI(M) State secretary P. Shanmugam condemned the police assault and said a few people staging a protest were injured as stones were thrown at them. He demanded that all those detained be released.
“The assault by the police personnel on those who staged a protest over reasonable demands by joining hands with the encroachers, instead of resolving the demands of the general public, is unacceptable in any way,” Mr. Shanmugam contended.
He called for appropriate action by the the Revenue Department to retrieve the public pathway from the private parties for public use. Mr. Shanmugam urged the State government for initiating action against police personnel, who were involved in the assault and detention of protesters.
