The Epigraphy division of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is taking steps to copy a fragmented Chola-era Tamil inscription engraved on a stone found in a parcel of agricultural field near Someshwara temple at Kammasandra village in Bengaluru rural district.

K. Munirathnam Reddy, Director, ASI (Epigraphy), said one of the villagers alerted the ASI regarding an inscription found near the centuries-old temple. The inscription was engraved on a stone, which was partially buried.

“We have the details of the front side of the inscription only, as the other side is buried in soil. As per preliminary reading, the inscription in Tamil language dates back to the 11th Century Chola period. It seems to have a record of 12 kandagam (a measure of land) gifted to the Someshwara temple for conducting pujas,” he said.

He further said that the ASI records indicated that several Tamil inscriptions from the same village and its surrounding areas were copied in 1946. Those inscriptions, also from the Chola period, particularly have references to Raja Raja Chola, said Mr. Reddy, adding that the ASI was taking steps to copy the other side of the inscription as well to discern more details.
