China accused the United States on Thursday (December 25, 2025) of distorting its defence policy in an effort to thwart an improvement in China-India ties. The significant development arrived during a press brief by Foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian in response to a question on whether China might exploit a recent easing of tensions with India over disputed border areas to keep ties between the United States and India from deepening.

Mr. Jian said China views its ties with India from a strategic and long-term perspective. He added that the border issue was a matter between China and India and “we object to any country passing judgment about this issue”. China’s response arrives closely on the heels of a report on Wednesday (December 24, 2025) that China “probably seeks to capitalize on decreased tension to stabilize bilateral relations and prevent the deepening of U.S.-India ties”.
What the report says?
A report by the U.S. Department of the War said China is attempting to leverage from remaining standoff sites along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) to stabilise its relationship with India. Further, it highlighted Beijing’s role in delivery of 36 J-10C fighter aircraft to Pakistan in two separate orders over the past five years, along with four frigates. The report underlines the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, signalling a calibrated diplomatic thaw after years of military and political strain.
India’s response
Despite Beijing’s recent diplomatic gestures, India is reportedly keeping a cautious stance, evaluating China’s moves in the context of historical mistrust and ongoing border disputes. Analysts suggest that unresolved issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), coupled with other strategic irritants, are likely to continue limiting the scope of bilateral cooperation, keeping the relationship under careful scrutiny.
