Why does the world descend in Pushkar, for so many years now? Is it for the joyrides on brightly lit-up giant wheels, the festive atmosphere or the buying and selling of livestock, especially camels?

Sand art by renowned artists add to the festival’s unique cultural showcase alongside camel rides and traditional performances.

Let’s do a ‘24 hours in Pushkar’ to try and capture the town’s charm that draws people in droves, year after year, even when entertainment options are now at the touch of a button. A visit to Pushkar is perfect to acquaint oneself with the town’s bustling markets and some quirky competitions, including the ‘longest moustache contest’ being one. Even if colourful animal gear is not your area of interest, it will become, for each stall sells them. Also, check out the leather mojris, wooden and metal crafts, decorative wall hangings, Bohemian ensembles and jewellery, and Rajasthani food stalls.

Time runs at double the speed when you have so much to do. But, you have to make time for camel rides in the dunes with traditional folk dances for accompaninment.

Offroading to somewhere in the middle of nowhere, there was a resort. Right outside, was a fancy camel cart driven by one Raghu Pawar.

You can then settle by the bonfire to watch a traditional dance performance, followed by traditional daal baati churma and other local dishes, before retiring to your tent for the night.

Next morning, visit the hugely popular Brahma temple and the holy kund. Walk around the lake, and watch people jostle for space, even as they take in the sights and sounds of the fair, like people have, for long.

As one drives back, ‘Mhari gnoomer chhe Nakhrali’ is the next song on the playlist. Your music choices too undergo a change when you visit Rajasthan.
