A 60-year-old woman from Secunderabad was duped of over ₹1 lakh by a fraudster posing as an Amazon Customer Care executive, after she searched online for help with a product refund. The Hyderabad Cyber Crimes police booked a case.

The victim had been waiting for a refund when she looked up Amazon’s customer support number on Google, said an officer, adding that she ended up dialling a fake number listed in the search results. A man identifying himself as Deepak Shukla answered the call, claiming to be from Amazon’s customer care.

According to the complaint filed with the Cyber Crime Police Station, the caller convinced her that he needed remote access to her phone to process the refund. Trusting the explanation, she permitted a screen-sharing session, which allowed the fraudster to access her Amazon and Google Pay accounts. When he claimed the refund could not be processed, he further persuaded her to share details of her bank accounts.

By the time she realised something was wrong, a total of ₹1,07,621 had been siphoned from her accounts. She then approached the Cyber Crime Police Station and lodged a complaint.
