‘100 Meters’, from the creator of ‘Orb: On the Movements of the Earth’, sets Netflix release

Netflix has set December 31 as the global streaming debut for 100 Meters, the latest feature tied to Uoto, creator of Orb: On the Movements of the Earth. The film will stream exclusively on the platform, positioning it as Netflix’s final major anime release of 2025.

100 Meters is produced by new studio Rock ’n’ Roll Mountain, and the film opened in Japan in September and has since maintained a 100% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a strong audience score from early viewers. The North American theatrical release, handled by GKIDS in October, introduced the feature to select markets, though Netflix has yet to confirm whether that dub will accompany the streaming launch. The newly released trailer is presented entirely in Japanese, suggesting the platform may lead with a subtitled version.

Directed by Kenji Iwaisawa, known for On-Gaku: Our Sound, the film follows sixth-grader Togashi, a standout runner whose easy command of the track is disrupted by transfer student Komiya. Their rivalry forms the narrative core, and the story is built around pressure, ambition, and the cost of talent.

Uoto is a Tokyo-born mangaka whose breakthrough came with Orb: On the Movements of the Earth — a stark, ambitious historical manga that ran from 2020 to 2022 and spanned eight volumes. In Orb, he reimagines 15th-century Europe as a fraught battleground for heliocentric ideas, weaving science, heresy, and moral urgency into a gripping narrative. The series has earned widespread acclaim with over five million copies in circulation by early 2025, critical accolades including the Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the Seiun Award.

Netflix has leaned heavily on anime throughout 2025, adding exclusives such as The Summer Hikaru Died and Sakamoto Days to its slate. 100 Meters is one of the service’s most anticipated releases of the year, and its arrival on the final day of 2025 positions it as a key title.
