The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday (December 8, 2024) alleged that former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, as the co-president of the Forum of Democratic Leaders in the Asia-Pacific (FDL-AP), was linked to an organisation financed by the “George Soros Foundation.”
Reiterating its allegation about a connection between the Congress party and billionaire George Soros, the BJP — through a thread on X — said it implied “their shared goal of diminishing India’s growth”.
“Sonia Gandhi, as the co-president of the FDL-AP Foundation, is linked to an organisation financed by the George Soros Foundation. Notably, the FDL-AP Foundation has expressed their views that treat Kashmir as a separate entity. This association between Sonia Gandhi and an organisation that has backed the idea of Kashmir as an independent nation expresses the influence of foreign entities on India’s internal affairs and the political impact of such connections,” it said.
The BJP further alleged that Ms. Gandhi’s chairmanship of the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation “led to a partnership with the George Soros Foundation, displaying the influence of foreign funding on Indian organisations.”
“Salil Shetty, the vice-president of the Soros-funded Open Society Foundation, participated in the Bharat Jodo Yatra. Here, he can be seen with none other than Rahul Gandhi, former president of the Congress,” it said, sharing a photograph.
The ruling party alleged that Mr. Gandhi’s press conference on Adani was live telecast by George Soros-funded Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP), which Mr. Gandhi used as a source to criticise Adani. “It shows nothing but their strong and dangerous relationship and highlights their attempts to derail the Indian economy,” said the BJP.
“Disappointing” says U.S. in sharp response denying BJP’s ‘anti-Modi agenda’ accusation
“George Soros and Rahul Gandhi have same sentiments regarding the ‘Adani issue’. Specifically, they’ve both suggested that Adani and Modi are closely linked, and that the Adani issue could topple the Modi government,” it said, alleging that “Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has publicly acknowledged George Soros as an ‘old friend’. “It’s something truly NOTEWORTHY!,” the post said.
Via another thread, the BJP had earlier accused the U.S. State Department of being behind the agenda of targeting the ruling party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “In fact, 50% of OCCRP’s funding comes directly from the U.S. State Department. OCCRP has served as a media tool for carrying out a Deep State agenda,” said a post adding that the “Deep State had a clear objective to destabilise India by targeting Prime Minister Modi”.
“To achieve this, they turned to OCCRP, instructing the organisation to provide material aimed at damaging PM Modi’s and India’s image. The Congress then exploited this material to launch attacks on PM Modi, propagate false narratives, and disrupt the functioning of Parliament. The U.S. Deep State was always working behind the scenes,” it said.
The BJP had said Mr. Gandhi’s frequent visits to the U.S. and the United Kingdom only further reinforced that connection. “For instance, during his secret visit to Uzbekistan last year, Samantha Power, the administrator of USAID (which funds OCCRP), was also present there at the same time. The Deep State is an evil force that has brought nothing but destruction,” said the post.
