Railways Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) reiterated its supremacy in Indian women’s hockey with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) in the final of the fifth Women’s inter-Department National championships at the Shivaji Stadium on Saturday.
India vice-captain Navneet Kaur struck a hat-trick while Salima Tete and Sangita Kumari scored once each as Railways proved too good for the opposition despite some impressive saves from IOC’s Bichu Devi. A late strike from Jyoti in the dying seconds of the game was too little, too late for the former champion.
Sports Authority of India (SAI) beat Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) 4-1 for the bronze, riding on Vartika Rawat’s brace.
The results: Final: RSPB 5 (Navneet Kaur 9, 21, 54, Salima Tete 39, Sangita Kumari 52) bt IOC 1 (Jyoti 60).
Third place playoff: SAI 4 (Vartika Rawat 16, 46, Aishwarya Chavan 39, Prini Kandir 41) bt CBDT 1 (Vaishnavi Phalke 44).
Individual awards: Player of the Final: Navneet Kaur (RSPB); Best Forward: Sangita Kumari (RSPB); Best Midfielder: Marina Lalramnghaki (SAI); Best goalkeeper: Bichu Devi (IOC); Player of the Tournament: Navneet Kaur (RSPB).
