As the humanitarian crisis worsens in Gaza, a global consensus is emerging. A growing number of heads of state, top UN officials, and international jurists are now openly calling Israel’s actions in Gaza what many have long feared: genocide.

But what does that term actually mean under international law? And why is proving genocide so incredibly difficult, even in the face of overwhelming human suffering?
