Disaster management squads on Saturday (May 24) stepped up surveillance in the upland areas of Kozhikode, where landslides had caused destruction during previous monsoon seasons.
The Revenue squad, acting on the instructions of the District Collector, reviewed the safety measures in place at Vilangad—one of the most vulnerable locations, where a major landslide last year caused significant loss.
Two locations have already been identified for setting up relief camps, with facilities to accommodate up to 200 people. Sufficient stock of rice and other food materials has been ensured at the village ration shops.
As per the District Collector’s directive, the installation of an emergency alarm system will also be considered by the local rescue squads. The squads have also issued alerts to nearby tribal settlements to remain vigilant against potential natural calamities.
