The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has released updated advice outlining steps the public can take to reduce the spread of flu, COVID-19 and other respiratory infections during the winter months. According to early UKHSA assessments, this season’s flu vaccines are offering “good protection” against hospitalisation in both children and adults. No changes have been made to existing COVID-19 or flu recommendations.

Precautions recommended by UKHSAThe guidance lists several measures that can help reduce transmission:
- Vaccination: Eligible individuals are encouraged to receive flu, COVID-19 or RSV vaccines, depending on their age and risk category.
- Stay home if unwell: People with symptoms of respiratory infections, especially those with a high temperature, are advised to remain at home until they feel better.
- Ventilation: When meeting others indoors, opening windows to improve airflow can reduce the buildup of virus particles.
- Hygiene practices: UKHSA recommends coughing into an elbow or tissue, disposing of used tissues promptly, washing hands regularly with soap and water, and cleaning frequently touched surfaces.
- Masks when unwell: Wearing a well-fitting face covering when unwell and needing to go out can reduce the release of respiratory particles. Masks may also offer some protection to the wearer.
Advice on SymptomsIndividuals with a high temperature or who feel too unwell to carry out normal activities should limit contact with others. If they must go out, they should avoid close contact with those at higher risk of severe illness. VaccineUKHSA says certain groups remain eligible for flu and COVID-19 vaccinations this winter. Early data reviewed by the agency indicates that this season’s flu vaccines are offering strong protection against hospitalisation in both children and adults.“Vaccines help protect those most vulnerable from developing serious illness and being hospitalised,” UKHSA noted, urging all eligible people to come forward for their flu vaccination as soon as possible. “Vaccines remain our best defence.”
