The Vellore Corporation has set aside funds to undertake works related to the construction of infrastructure facilities in schools and healthcare centres maintained by the civic body, in its estimates that will be tabled before the council meetingchaired by Mayor Sujatha Anandakumar, for approval of the council on Friday.
Corporation officials said that the goal of allocating more funds to these two sectors is to improve their standards of schools and healthcare centres within civic body limits.
“In schools, sanitation, especially new washrooms for students, is a major work that will be taken up in the coming days. Additional buildings in health centres will also be built to meet the growing needs of patients,” P. Janaki Raveendran, Corporation Commissioner told The Hindu.
At present, the Corporation has 93 schools with over 60 being middle schools up to (Class VIII) and with a total strength of 10,000 students. eighth. Around have been enrolled in them. Most of the washrooms, especially in primary schools, were damaged due to poor upkeep. As a result, construction of separate washrooms will be taken up in seven corporation primary schools for boys, girls and teachers. The facilities, costing around ₹10 lakh each, will be completed in three months.
Additionally, the Corporation has allocated a sum of ₹3.4 crore for sanitation works – which includes the cleaning of campuses, classrooms and washrooms –in all 93 schools as a part of improving general hygiene in schools.
New classrooms
The civic body will also construct additional classrooms for middle schools in Makkan near fort and Kagitharpattarai on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, at a cost of ₹56.50 lakh.
Currently, the Corporation runs 10 Urban Primary Healthcare Centres (UPHCs) and 50 sub-health centres within its limits. The civic body will construct a UPHC at Alamelumangapuram on the highway at a cost of ₹75 lakh and two sub-health centres at Sherif Nagar and Kalaspalayam for ₹30 lakh each.
An additional building for UPHC in Lakshmipuram will also be built at a cost of ₹60 lakh.
Restoration of market
According to the officials, the Corporation will also restore the British-era Netaji Market near the fort complex at an estimated cost of 10 lakh. A consultant has been appointed to prepare a detailed project report. The report will be submitted in two months after which restoration work will be initiated.
The officials said that the Netaji wholesale market, covering 1.5 acres, has 982 shops including 282 retail outlets. The market was built in 1868, two years after the Vellore Municipality was established in 1866.
