Telangana Government has decided in principle to relax detention system in Osmania University for the current academic year.
Health Minister C. Damodar Rajanarsimha made the announcement during the Question Hour in the Telangana Legislative Assembly on Monday (December 16, 2024) responding to a request made by MIM floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi. The Minister said that the detention system in Osmania University was in place from ages. Students were exempted from detention rules from the academic year 2020-21 to 2022-23 due to Covid-19 pandemic and the system resumed from the academic year 2023-24.
He said 2,535 students engineering students from the government and private colleges appeared for the examination. Of which, 2,205 passed/promoted and 330 detained. Mr. Owaisi expressed concern that the detention system was introduced suddenly causing hardship to students. There was different syllabi in different colleges and there was variation in the detention policy too.
He wanted the government to implement same policy for all students besides providing them an opportunity to continue their studies by conducting advanced supplementary examinations. This would bring down the drop out rate significantly besides enabling students to avail fee reimbursement.
