Telangana Government announces loan waiver for handloom weavers, sanctions ₹33 crore

In a major relief to individual handloom weavers, the State Government has issued an order (GO Rt no: 56) waiving loans of up to ₹1 lakh for weavers on Sunday (March 9, 2025). To implement this initiative, the government has sanctioned ₹33 crore, said Textile Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao.

In a statement, the Minister highlighted the government’s efforts to revive the handloom sector, which had been neglected by the previous administration. He stated that upon coming to power, the government took proactive measures, including issuing orders directing government departments, institutions, and associations to procure textiles from TGSCO. This initiative aims to provide sustained employment for weavers while boosting the industry’s growth.

To modernise the sector and enhance skill development, the Government has also established the Konda Laxman Bapuji Indian Institute of Handloom Technology (IIHT). The institute will offer a three-year Diploma in Handloom & Textile Technology (DHTT) to 60 students annually.

Addressing long-standing demands from powerloom workers, the Government has set up a yarn depot in Vemulawada, Rajanna Sircilla district with a ₹50 crore corpus fund. Further, as part of the “Telangana Cheneta Abhayahasta Scheme,” the government has sanctioned ₹168 crore under to be implemented by January 10, 2025.

The Minister also revealed that under the Netannaku Cheyutha scheme, ₹290.09 crore has been disbursed, benefiting 36,133 handloom workers. Additionally, ₹494.48 crore has been released to TGSCO, clearing pending payments to handloom cooperative societies MACS and other weavers’ organisations.
