The lifeline of Chamarajanagar district – Suvarnavathi dam – has reached its full level and ‘bagina’ was offered to the swollen dam by MLA and Chairman of Mysore Sales International Limited Puttarangashetty.
Before offering the ‘bagina’, the MLA, accompanied by CADA chairman P. Mariswamy, visited Lord Ganesha Temple and offered puja.
Later, speaking to reporters, the MLA said the dam has reached its full level because of heavy rains in its catchment area. In view of this, ‘bagina’ was offered to the dam, and farmers and the people in the district will benefit from it. The dam will also ease drinking water supply and provide water for agriculture as well, he added.
More than 20 lakes that are part of the command area of the dam have also reached their full level, the MLA said.
The reservoir will largely benefit Siddaiayanapura and Hongalawadi farmers. If necessary, water will be released from the dam to standing crops, he said.
Water released
In view of heavy rains200 cusecs of water was discharged from Suvarnavathi reservoir in the district. The water discharge from the reservoir will be increased if the inflow into the dam rises following heavy downpours.
Therefore, farmers and villagers on the river banks in the command area of the dam need to take precautionary measures, and take care of their properties and livestock, said the Executive Engineer of the Kabini canals of the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam in a statement on Monday.
